With the world's most prestigious motorsport event; Monaco Grand Prix 2013 right around the corner, all eyes are on the Mercedes team, currently fourth in the constructor standings. Though they've captured pole position in the last 3 races and then went on to concede, this won't matter much in Monte Carlo. The famed circuit is notorious for making it extremely difficult for drivers to overtake each other.
Schumacher's fiasco last year is still fresh in memory as the fastest lap in Monaco's history was not enough to secure the German's victory. His pole position was degraded to sixth, owing to a penalty from causing an accident in the previous Spanish meet.
Spanish GP winner Fernando Alonso (third overall) is expecting Ferrari to put on a strong showing in Monaco. "I'm confident for Monte Carlo," he said to BBC. "Looking at the last three years, even when we were not competitive in Monte Carlo, we always managed to be on the podium, more or less, in a consistent way so that's the aim for this year as well."
Pirelli is under fire for faulty and vulnerable tyres. An increasing number of pit stops, nearly 80 last week in Spain, is turning the event into a pit-stop contest, claimed 1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve. Pirelli's director, Paul Hembery says the company has yet to discover the cause of the problem.
Less than 40 laps into the race and strips of rubber were flying off Jean-Eric Vergne's rear tyre. Sebastian Vettel, who was in fourth, fears races are being more influenced by tyres than driver skills. The sight of drivers making early pit stops caused panic reactions and crowds found it difficult to follow the race.
Pirelli had made modifications to its hard compound before the Spanish GP. They also gave drivers an extra set of hard tyres to practice on. But apparently, they were unable to resolve the problem, and now do not have enough time for Monaco. It will be interesting to see how the tyres cope well in the twists and turns of Monaco Grand Prix 2013. Drivers and teams are keeping their fingers crossed and praying that the tyres hold on the tarmac without shredding like paper.
